I see what you mean about the food and mouse - I managed to keep them from going after some food behind them by keeping the mouse cursor in front. Perhaps you could also consider a cap on the distance they can see ahead so the effect is more perceptible. I used to have some turtles (well terrapins actually) as a kid and this little gadget is starting to remind me of the good times I had with them! I have it so they can't see the food if it is behind them, but I don't think it is very noticable because they can always see the mouse. I'd like to see them not knowing there's food around unless they can see it, like within a specified vector simulating field of vision or something.
