Gadgets » Fish
Add a touch of nature to your page with these hungry little fish. Watch how they eagerly swim toward your mouse hoping that you’ll drop a few flakes of food. You can change the number of fish, the color of each fish, and the color of the water. You can also add an image to the background.
To give the fish more room to swim, download Google Pack and install Google Desktop.
Then add the fish gadget from the fun and games section of the gadget directory.
You can also add the Fish to:

David,
The back and forth motion is done with sine curves. Chapter 3 of Keith Peter’s Foundation ActionScript Animation: Making Things Move! (Foundation) is a good a book to learn about using trigonometry for animations in actionscript/flash.

Hi Shannon,
Right now the fish are not in the directory on Google Desktop, so you are going to have to add them the hard way.
Copy this address:
http://fishgadget.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/fish.xml
and then paste it into the “search gadgets” text box at the top right of the add/remove gadgets screen. After pressing the “search gadgets” button, you should then see the preview of the fish which you can add to your sidebar by clicking the “add” button.
I hope this works for you. It’s fun resizing the window for the fish and watching how the act in a large tank where there is lots of room for them to pick up speed. It’s also fun cramming them all into a little tiny tank and seeing how they react when you add some food to the mix.

How do you make the movement so lifelike?

I managed to get your tree frog (we call him “Hey, Skippy”)onto my desktop permanently. My granddaughter loves him. So do I (She’s 8, I’m 60)
Now we want your wonderful FISH on the desktop permanently. (We have named them Denise, Dorknoid, Flippy, Floppy and Influenza.) I’ve managed to get them as far as my Google homepage, but I don’t use that all the time. I’ve got Skippy and my Bush Quote Generator always, but try as I might (I’m not good at this) I can’t get the fish to just BE there. I’ve got a shortcut icon I added, but it only wants to “preview” and not jsut be there like Skippy and the Village Idiot.
HELP!

I will either be adding other fish or allowing users to customize the way they look.
